Intrepid Travel is offering half-price permits to see gorillas in Rwanda, despite the recent announcement by local authorities that prices are doubling to $1,500 USD.
Intrepid is one of a few companies that pre-purchased permits for its scheduled group treks in the Volcanoes National Park for 2017. These scheduled group tours may still be booked at a reduced price of $750.
The announcement by the local authorities was an effort to strengthen conservation efforts and contribute more to the development of communities in the area.
On eight African itineraries, ranging from 16 to 64 days, Intrepid travellers are guided by local leaders through Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Parks. The 16-day Gorillas & Game Parks overland adventure through Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda—including a close encounter with the gorillas in their natural habitat – starts at $3,557 CAD.
Intrepid Africa Product Manager, Jenny Gray, said that the gorillas are a main highlight for travellers, and one of the main reasons that Intrepid’s Rwanda tour departures have increased by around 20 per cent in 2017.
“A gorilla encounter is an extraordinary experience. Although it is one of those rare bucket-list moments that are hard to put a price on, we’re in a fortunate position to be able to save our guests hundreds of dollars this year,” she said.
